Connect to Your Network

I was clicking around the internet, searching for clarity and advice about growing my business. Instead, I ended up feeling more overwhelmed and anxious with every new tab I opened (OK, I had also consumed industrial quantities of coffee).

That’s when I decided to do it the old-fashioned way and ask the people I know. I admitted that I was feeling lost and I asked for guidance. I was genuinely touched by how many people responded, generously offering their time, experiences, and advice.

I had a twenty-three-minute phone call with someone on their lunch break, and in that short time I gained more insight into SEO than I could’ve gotten from weeks on a course or from hours of trawling the internet, trying to separate useful information from vacuous content and hidden subscription traps.

One of the most valuable conversations I had was with someone who shared their story of “unsuccessful entrepreneurship.” It was honest, revealing, and packed with practical lessons, none of which I would have thought to search for.

I had a lovely coffee chat with someone who not only opened my mind but flipped it inside out with a completely new perspective on a long-standing problem.

And yes—some job offers came out of it, too. The internet has never done that for me.

All because I reached out to my people.

Connect to Your Future Clients

As part of launching and growing my business, I’ve been thinking about how to connect with potential clients. My default – no surprise – is writing. Lines on a page are where I feel most eloquent, clear, and thorough. Writing gives me space to think, to play with language, and to express my ideas fully. All excellent reasons for being a copywriter.

In an ideal world, great copy alone would bring global reach and untold wealth. Spoiler: this isn’t an ideal world.  To grow my business, I need to be seen and heard. I need to let future clients get to know me and trust that my work and personality speak together. So, I’ve been thinking about video.

I hate appearing on video—more than you could imagine. But I know they work. They work on me. And also, it’s 2025.

So, here’s my next personal goal: to record some short videos, introduce myself, and let people get a sense of who I am. If you spot one, feel free to have a laugh at how awkward I feel recording and releasing it, but please also leave a kind comment. It helps.

Connect to Human Relationships

The third kind of connection I’ve been reflecting on is a big one: human connection in the age of AI.

This isn’t just the last item in a list; it’s the topic of our time. Starting a copywriting business in 2025 means reckoning seriously with the role of AI. I’ll talk more about that another time, but for now, I will stay focused on connection.

AI is incredible. It’s a powerful tool that unlocks creativity, removes barriers, and levels the playing field for so many people. But it cannot replace the nourishment and depth of human relationships.

In a world flooded with AI-generated content, real human connection stands out more than ever. It feels warm, alive, and trustworthy. It burns true and real, like firelight in a digital storm.

Connection with our support networks, clients, and collaborators is something to be valued and protected. It’s deeper, more creative, and often – sometimes, somehow – quicker and more fruitful than anything we can do relying on our technological tools alone.

Nurturing the quiet power of listening

Listening - true, deep listening - is a superpower. We live in a world where the pressure to broadcast content, to have our say, and to make our mark is constant. I realise that in writing this I am doing all the above, but this article is about a lifetime of...
